Book launch at Dogears Bookstore, Goa, in conversation with Rinald D’ Souza 11 May 2024

Post-independence India’s most controversial artist, Francis Newton Souza challenged the aesthetic and moral sensibilities of the human social order. The uneasy space in his art “troubled social comfort by its transgression of taboos”

Janeita Singh’s “magisterial treatise” on his work and life, titled ‘FN Souza: The Archetypal Artist’, “is timely and epic in its research” Janeita brings to focus Souza’s pursuit of wholeness and beauty in nature, which isn’t in the eye of the beholder but in the cultivated eye.

For a wider discussion of her work, join us for a conversation with Janeita Singh, *on Saturday, 11th May, at 5pm at The Dogears Bookshop*. Janeita will be in conversation with Rinald D’Souza, who, apart from his current research, reads on South Asian art history, and recently co-edited a book on The Jesuits, Goa and the Arts.

Engaging time at the beautiful, intimate setting at Dogears, host to national/ international authors and readers!
Museum of Goa book launch; in conversation with Lina Vincent 07 July 2024

*MOG SUNDAYS* This is a conversation between Author & Critic Janeita Singh and Art Historian & Curator Lina Vincent on the book, the illustrated monograph, FN Souza: The Archetypal Artist Niyogi Books Tultul Niyogi based on a 12-year research project, that began in 2012. The magnetism of the primordial imagery in Souza’s art “hooked me” says Janeita Singh. “Janeita brings together fascinating threads of philosophical, religious and artistic practices in her essays that let us slowly soak in the multiple layers of Souza’s art”. She is an academician turned literary-art critic. Her writing based on the belief, ‘critic as an artist’ generates new perspectives of ways of seeing. Lina Vincent is an independent art historian & curator. Since 2009, the focus areas of her research have extended to projects with arts education, printmaking history and practice, the documentation of living traditions and folk arts in India, and environmental consciousness in the arts.

Dinner at Raj Villa: Late Shri Khuswant Singh’s house in Kasauli 20 Oct 2024
It was a privilege to be invited to the dinner party at Raj Villa (Khushwant Singh’s home in Kasauli where he did his best writing) hosted by Rahul Singh & Niloufer Bilimoria on the last evening of KSLF.
A few photos of his library, writing room, the sleeping space and the garden with the crackling bonfire, where I danced to my heart’s content under the moonlight and the rustling pine trees.
Khushwant Singh’s definitive work, A HISTORY OF THE SIKHS has occupied a place of pride on my bookshelf. The Illustrated Weekly of yore was avidly read in our house due to its esoteric content, diverse and wide coverage of interdisciplinary matter et al.
Khushwant Singh lived his personal myth, bold and brave. He was a man of letters, who had the audacity to embrace the personal and collective shadow, a thrust towards wholesomeness rather than perfection (perfection is for the gods). He straddled the dichotomy of being larger than life and yet grounded and empathetic.
I never met him, but his writings and persona were pervasive in our lives. My mother would often recount how our ancestors were friends and had professional dealings with each other.
KS and FN Souza are ‘peas in a pod’, unfettered spirits, who spoke their mind fearlessly. The mark of great thinkers is the ability to map unchartered territory, to go into zones of silence and to come back with something to say. Their agenda was about truth and renewed patterns of thought in everyday living. Feels like I am back from a pilgrimage.

The Provocative Palette — discussion with Asad Lalljee & Kamini Sawhney, Mumbai Li Live 15-17 Nov 2024

Mumbai Literature Live 15 November 2024

Book launch & conversation based on my book FN Souza: The Archetypal Artist. The culmination of a 12-year research project, that brings a new perspective to Souza’s radical art practice. A critical study through a feminist and Jungian lens. In essence the making of new consciousness, and renewal of collective human thought. The panel will focus on Souza’s unique and inimitable works that hold a mirror to our repressed and rejected notions. Tabling new perspectives rooted in interdisciplinary research the panelists deliberate upon his radical art, sometimes shocking, at times bewildering and at all times surprising.
